As we step into a new year, many of us embrace traditions to welcome fresh beginnings. It’s a time to reflect on the past year and set goals and resolutions for the coming year. This is a perfect time to reignite passions, and reset focus.
Several years ago, I adopted a new tradition to help me keep my focus and intentions top of mind throughout the year. The “One-Word Movement”. This simple yet powerful concept encourages you to choose one word to inspire and guide you all year.
The “One-Word” movement has gained traction since its inception in 2004, thanks to motivational speakers and authors Jon Gordon, Dan Britton, and Jimmy Page. The idea is straightforward: identify one word that will serve as your guiding theme, motivating and inspiring you toward the life you want.
This year, I struggled to “own” a single word. I tossed around options like Community, Ask, and Purposeful, but none truly resonated. After much consideration, my word for 2025 has landed at “Open”.
Open:
Adjective: Allowing access, passage, or a view through an empty space; not closed or blocked up.
Verb: Leave a space allowing access and view; unfold; spread out.
Noun: Outdoors, especially in an exposed or unprotected setting. “Guests were sitting in the open on the terrace.”
For me, “Open” encompasses:
- Being open to new ways of doing things
- More receptive to the opinions and ideas of others
- Viewing things with an open mind, heart, and spirit
- Participating more generously and openly
- Being open to asking for and accepting help
- Taking action that may leave me open to rejection
- And so much more!
I encourage you to choose one-word to inspire and guide you through 2025. It’s a simple and powerful tool that can make a big difference.
It’s proven that sharing your word helps bring clarity to the thought process, and fosters accountability as you move forward.
